SMALLPOX FACTS
THE HISTORY OF SMALLPOX: Studies have shown that Smallpox first originated in Africa and then spread up through India and China. Later in the 5th-7th centuries it moved up to Europe, which led to the Europeans bringing it to America where there were Smallpox epidemics in the 17th and 18th century. This then impacted the Native American population, the new disease spread to quickly for them to find a way to defend it, therefor many of the Native American population was wiped out.
THE VACCINE: The current Smallpox vaccine was invented in 1796, but no longer is given out to the public. If the vaccine were to be distributed, it would last a person 3-5 years. The vaccine is made of another virus similar to Smallpox called Vaccinia. Vaccinia is close enough to Smallpox to help the recipient build imunity without getting the actual smallpox disease. The Smallpox vaccine stopped being distributed after 1972 after the disease was eradicated.
